Sexually transmitted diseases (also known as STDs and once called venereal diseases or VD) are infectious diseases that spread from person to person through intimate contact. STDs affect all backgrounds and ages of girls and guys who are having sex, it has no regard for socio-economic status.
Unfortunately, getting sexually trasmitted diseases is now a common teen-age occurence. Since teen-agers have increased risk for transmitting and obtaining sexually transmitted diseases, it's important to learn how you can minimize or eliminate your exposure.
Being an embarrassment is the least of your concerns with STDs. They're a serious health problem. If untreated, some STDs can cause permanent damage, such as infertility (losing the ability to have a baby) and even death (in the case of AIDS).
